Net. art was formulated through an accident after Vuk Cosic experienced a software glitch. He received an email that had a glitch and only pulled out the term Net.art. This term then came to stand for any kind of art that was merged with online graphics, email, text or image. As long as it takes place online. The net. art community wanted to hone in on this new invention of the internet and utilize its immediacy to build an online community. This online collaborative space opened up a space for digital artists outside institutions in the art world of which they were not welcomed in to. Art culture that had slowed down in the late 80s had gained resurgence in the 90s as people were able to share on the internet. Many artists at the time such as andy warhol took
their work online.
Jodi .org used her platform to highlight network functionality at a simple level. she gained cult status in the new media art world. She utilized simple html code to come up with interactive art work.
This phenomena of net.art sparked space for a conference Net.Art Per Se. This sparked a parody CNN site to hold all the discoveries from the conference. It showcased many artists work while highlighting the fact that soon the internet would be taken over by corporate entities and use commercially.
In 1997 net.art grew to include collective as well as film. Formalism took over and artists used a set of objects of html to create their work. CPU screenshots
were used to create a collective work. People also utilized the net art space as a form of prank or stolen identity. for example Vuk COsic duplicated the documenta x site to comment on the workings of its institutional values. Overall net.art was meant as an alternative art space that focused more on the everyday. But became much more.
